Matwork Class Levels
For many people that have done Pilates previously, you may be aware that there are many different styles of Pilates being taught around the world, and a variety of structures for delivery. As a Pilates is our sole focus we have a strong emphasis on functional and appropriate progression and therefore structure our classes at different levels.
Generally we ask for all participants to enter our matwork program at the Introductory level. Pilates is a different form of exercise where the basics are continually required and re-enforced through all the levels; using poor muscle patterning may prevent you from progressing properly with good form and therefore not getting the best from your workout. Your instructor will indicate when it is appropriate for you to progress to the next level.
If you have done Pilates recently and would like to discuss our policy to start everyone into the introductory level, please contact us as we are more than happy to consider options.
Introductory
The introductory level of class is designed for participants who have not done Pilates before (or have had a big break, or not done our style of Pilates before). At this level you will learn to understand our style of Pilates, specifically pelvic floor, breathing, neutral spine and neutral pelvis. You will also be taken through many exercises that form the basis and work in your body to perform almost all of the exercises in the Pilates repertoire. This is a crucial level and many participants attend more than one term to really capture the essence and fundamentals of Pilates.
Foundation
At the Foundation level the range of exercises and equipment is greatly expanded from the Introductory repertoire. Each term varies from the last to keep your mind and body working, but always consistent with our method of Pilates. For many participants, this class level offers enough challenge and variety that they are happy to remain here and continue to achieve the results they want from their Pilates.
Progressive
This is a class level that requires a greater depth mental and physical understanding of the basics. To be able to attend this class we suggest you practice Pilates twice a week for approximately 30-45 mins in addition to your class (if you only want to attend 1 class per week). General fitness certainly helps Pilates work, however, at this level of Pilates the application of the Pilates principles and practice of repertoire is the only way to obtain strong Pilates body.
Intermediate
The Intermediate level is really only for those that are truly committed to Pilates. This level is the start of very strong repertoire. In addition to working from our progressive level matwork, we also require participants attend one equipment based session per week. Pilates is often touted as a ‘safe’ form of exercise, however there are exercises in our repertoire that are considered controversial (when compared to general exercise guidelines). Unless the full understanding of Pilates is applied, participants can be at risk of injuring themselves. We highly value our participant’s health and safely, but also the integrity of Pilates work. We have a strong commitment to progression, but not to the detriment of our clients or the application of the Pilates Method.
All classes are assessed over the six week term with instructors very happy to upgrade clients within the classes. If you wish to improve technique, you can also ask for a private session to focus on your technique and skills to progress effectively.
